You have a jagua tattoo you would rather see gone. Most of the time it is not even that the design was bad: it has started to fade, it has turned gray, patchy, half there, and a half-gone tattoo looks worse than either a clean one or bare skin. Sometimes it is a design that smudged, a result darker than you pictured, or an event coming up. Let us start with the truth, because everything else follows from it: there is no eraser for jagua. It is a stain in your skin, not a sticker on top of it. You cannot lift it off in one go. What you can do is help it leave a lot faster, without irritating your skin on the way. This page covers what genuinely works, in what order, and what only damages your skin for nothing. We sell jagua, so we know exactly how it behaves, including when you want rid of it. The honest version, in three lines Jagua leaves when your skin renews itself, over one to two weeks. You can speed that up by a few days with gentle exfoliation, oil, hot baths and swimming. What you cannot do is erase it in an afternoon. Forcing it only irritates your skin, it does not shift the color. Why it does not wash off: a stain, not a sticker Jagua is a juice pressed from the fruit of Genipa americana, a South American tree. Its active compound, genipin, reacts with the proteins in the surface layer of your skin and oxidizes into a deep blue-black over 24 to 36 hours. The color is not laid on your skin: it forms inside the cells of your epidermis. That is what gives it the look of a real tattoo. It is also what makes removal on demand impossible. If you want the full mechanism, we explain it in our guide to jagua. That is the whole difference with a transfer tattoo, which is a film sitting on the surface and comes off in minutes with oil or soapy water. If it is a sticker tattoo you are trying to remove, this is not the right page: head to how to remove a temporary tattoo instead. Timing changes everything: the three windows This is the part nobody explains, and it is the most useful. What you can achieve depends entirely on when you start. Under an hour after applying: wash, right now You have just taken the gel off and there is a smudge, a wobbly line, a mark on your finger? This is the moment that counts. While the color has not developed, genipin has not finished binding to the proteins in your skin. Wash immediately with soap, thoroughly, and repeat two or three times within the hour. You will not make it all disappear, but you can sharply reduce how strongly it shows up. This is the only window where washing genuinely does something. Between 24 and 36 hours: do not attack it yet This feels counterintuitive, but while the color is developing, hard exfoliation mostly gives you an uneven result: light patches, dark patches, a mottled tattoo that looks worse than what you set out to remove. If the color is still coming up, let it finish. Use the time to moisturize instead, and you set up the next stage properly. After 36 hours: speed up the renewal The color is set and nothing washes it out. From here, only one logic works: help your skin renew faster than usual, so the stained cells go progressively. That is what the routine below is for. The most common case: it is fading and it looks bad This is the real reason most people land on this page. A jagua tattoo does not disappear the way it arrived: at the end of its life the blue-black turns gray, the areas that rub go before the rest, and for two or three days you wear a ghost of a design, half there. That is normal, and it is the only moment where it looks worse than on day one. The good news is real: it is also the moment it comes off most easily. If the color is fading, the stained cells have already reached the surface and are shedding on their own. The routine below, at this stage, finishes an end-of-life tattoo in two to four days where a fresh one would need a week. Put plainly: the uglier it is, the faster it goes. And if you have an event in the meantime, makeup bridges the gap without any scrubbing. For next time: a well cared-for jagua fades more evenly and stays sharp longer before the gray phase. That is exactly what our aftercare guide is about. The gentle routine that actually works None of these steps is spectacular, and that is a good sign: the spectacular methods damage skin. Combined and repeated daily, they can bring a jagua that would run two weeks down to a short week. That is the honest order of magnitude. Nobody can promise you better. Gentle exfoliation, once a day. This is the heart of the method, because it mechanically removes the stained cells. In a hot shower, use a fine-grain scrub (sugar and olive oil, homemade, works very well) or an exfoliating mitt, two to three minutes in circular motions, without forcing. Once a day is enough: two gentle sessions beat one furious scrubbing session, which irritates without doing more. Oil, massaged in, morning and evening. Olive, coconut or sweet almond oil, massaged in for a few minutes. Let us be precise about what it does: oil does not dissolve the pigment. That pigment is bound to the proteins in your skin, and nothing dislodges it without damaging the skin on the way. What oil does is soften the outer layer and, with massage, help surface cells let go. A real help, but a modest one. It is a complement to exfoliation, not a magic wand. Long hot baths. Twenty to thirty minutes in a good hot bath softens the outer layer, and a pass with a washcloth at the end does the rest. If baths are not your thing, a hot shower slightly longer than usual works in the same direction. Moisturize after every session. It sounds counterproductive. In reality, hydrated skin renews better than damaged, dry skin, and it is that renewal that carries the color away. Rich cream after every exfoliation, no exceptions. The shortcut everyone talks about: the pool This is the tip that comes up everywhere and, for once, it is true. Chlorinated water and long soaks noticeably speed up shedding. The proof: in our aftercare guide we specifically tell people to avoid pools when they want to keep a tattoo. Just flip the advice. In practice: swim for thirty minutes, rub gently with a mitt in the shower afterwards, moisturize generously. The sea works too, with the salt and the friction of sand helping. One caveat: chlorine dries skin out, so the moisturizer afterwards is not optional, unless you fancy trading a tattoo for dry patches. Jagua on your hands or fingers? The classic when you draw freehand with jagua gel: a mark on your index finger, a print on your palm. Two situations. If it is fresh, back to the first window: soap immediately, several washes within the hour, and you will limit the damage a lot. If the color is already there, one quirk works against you then for you: the skin on your hands is richer in keratin, so the stain takes more strongly, but hands are also the most washed, rubbed and used part of the body. Between normal washing and daily gentle exfoliation, a mark on your fingers usually goes within a few days, before the tattoo itself. Need an instant result? Cover it Job interview tomorrow, ceremony on Saturday: if the deadline is too short for any method, the only honest instant solution is not removing the tattoo, it is hiding it. A high-coverage waterproof concealer (the kind made for covering permanent tattoos, from any pharmacy or department store), set with translucent powder, makes a jagua invisible for several hours. It is not removal, but it is the only five-minute eraser that genuinely exists. The remover gloves and sprays sold online Several temporary tattoo brands sell removal accessories: exfoliating gloves around €20, remover sprays around €10. Worth it? Here is the honest read, bearing in mind we sell jagua too, so we have no stake in defending or trashing these products. The exfoliating glove: yes, it works, because it is an exfoliating glove. Mechanical exfoliation is the most effective method, as covered above, so a dedicated glove does the job. But there is nothing tattoo-specific about it: a standard exfoliating mitt (kessa, loofah) from a pharmacy or supermarket, for a few euros, does exactly the same thing. And one detail in the demo videos should read as a warning rather than a selling point: when skin comes out bright red, the scrubbing went past the dose. Irritated skin renews less well, so you lose on the trade. The remover spray: physics caps what it can do. Once the color is bound to skin proteins, no liquid dissolves it without stripping the skin along with it. A spray like that can only act in two ways: soften and loosen surface cells (like oil and a bath), or wipe away residue that was already going. That is not nothing, but it is what your bathroom already does. A telling detail: these products describe themselves as being for faded tattoos and residue, which is to say the moment the tattoo is leaving within a few days anyway. In a video filmed at that stage, it is hard to separate the effect of the product from the effect of time. Without an ingredient list on display, there is not much more to say, and that is rather the problem. Our position, in one sentence: nothing in these accessories beats the free routine described above. If you want a mitt, buy a standard exfoliating one and keep your €20 for the next design. What does not work, or damages your skin for nothing Some of the advice going around, including on well-ranked sites, runs from useless to dangerous. In order: The "method" Why it is a no Nail polish remover, acetone Recommended on some sites, and yet: these are solvents for nail polish, not for skin. They do not reach a pigment bound to proteins, but they burn and irritate very effectively. Never. Bleach, household stain removers Chemical burns guaranteed, zero result. Nothing from under the sink goes on skin. Neat lemon, or lemon and baking soda Highly acidic, photosensitizing (spots and burns on the area), and the pigment could not care less. The great classic of false good ideas, and it is still being recommended by sites that rank well. Rubbing alcohol Less dangerous than acetone, but the gain is minimal and it dries and irritates. The benefit-to-damage ratio does not stack up: gentle exfoliation does better. Pumice stone, furious scrubbing You are not removing color, you are grazing the skin that carries it. Redness, possibly scarring, to gain a day at best. The rule that covers all of it: if it stings, burns or leaves marked redness, stop. A method that damages your skin speeds up nothing, because irritated skin renews worse, not better. The one exception: itching, swelling, burning A jagua tattoo should neither itch nor burn. If your skin reacts (patches, swelling, intense itching, sometimes several days after application), the product used may have contained PPD, a chemical dye that unscrupulous sellers add to darken and speed up the result. It is banned in cosmetics for skin across the EU, which tells you what to make of anything containing it. The warning signs, before any reaction: a black color visible immediately (real jagua takes 24 to 36 hours to develop) and wording like "black henna" or "instant jagua". In that case this is no longer about looks: wash with cold water, put nothing else on it, and see a doctor without delay if symptoms persist or spread. These reactions can leave lasting sensitization. We have written a full guide to the dangers of black henna and PPD, and it is the only subject on this page where we will tell you not to handle it alone. And afterwards? Once the tattoo is gone, or nearly, your skin has been through several days of exfoliation: moisturize it generously for a few days, use SPF if the area sees sun, and wait a short week before applying a new design in the same spot. It will thank you, and the next tattoo will take better on rested skin. Your next design Gone? On to the next one. That is the whole point of jagua: one to two weeks, bare skin, and a new design. 600+ realistic blue-black tattoos, on in five minutes. See all the tattoos → Free shipping over €40 · Jagua ink, no PPD Frequently asked questions Can you remove a jagua tattoo right after applying it? Yes, but only within the first hour or so. As long as the gel has just come off and the color has not developed, the genipin has not finished binding. Washing immediately with soap, two or three times over, noticeably lightens a fresh smudge. After 24 to 36 hours the color is bound to the proteins in your skin and nothing washes it off. From then on you can only speed up its natural fade. Is soap and water enough to remove jagua? Once the color has developed, no. Jagua has stained the surface layers of your skin rather than laying a film on top. Soap keeps a normal fade ticking along, but to speed things up you have to help your skin renew itself: gentle exfoliation, hot baths, moisturizing. Does lemon remove a jagua tattoo? No, and it is a bad idea. Lemon juice cannot reach pigment bound inside the skin, it is highly acidic, and it makes skin photosensitive. You risk irritation and sun spots for almost no result. Gentle exfoliation does better without the damage. Does swimming make a jagua tattoo fade faster? Yes. Chlorinated water and long soaks soften the outer layer of skin and speed up shedding, which is exactly why we tell people to avoid pools when they want to keep a tattoo. Swim, then rub gently with a washcloth in the shower and moisturize well, because chlorine is drying. How do you get jagua off your hands or fingers after applying it? If it is fresh (under an hour), wash with soap immediately and repeatedly to limit how much color appears. If the color has already developed, the skin on your hands holds jagua longer because it is richer in keratin. Daily gentle exfoliation plus all the washing your hands already get will handle the rest within a few days. Hands are, oddly enough, where it goes fastest through normal use. My jagua tattoo itches. Is that normal? No. A jagua tattoo should never burn or itch. If the area itches, swells or turns red, it may be a reaction to PPD, a chemical dye some unscrupulous sellers add (often sold as black henna or instant jagua). Wash with cold water, put nothing else on it, and see a doctor if symptoms persist, since reactions can appear several days later. How long does a jagua tattoo take to fade on its own? One to two weeks in most cases, the time it takes your epidermis to renew itself. On hands and feet, where the outer layer is thicker, it can hold a little longer. It fades evenly, moving from blue-black to a light gray. Do nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol work on jagua? No. You will read this advice everywhere, but jagua pigment is bound to the proteins in your skin. No solvent dissolves it without attacking your skin first. Acetone and nail polish remover have no business on skin, and alcohol dries and irritates for a minimal gain. The only effective, safe route is speeding up skin renewal, gently. My half-faded jagua tattoo looks bad. How do I finish the job? Good news: a jagua tattoo that has started to fade is the easiest kind to remove, because the stained cells are already at the surface. Two to four days of daily gentle exfoliation, with oil and moisturizer, is usually enough to finish it. If you have an event before then, a high-coverage waterproof concealer hides it in the meantime. Do exfoliating gloves and tattoo remover sprays work? The exfoliating glove works, because mechanical exfoliation works. But a basic exfoliating mitt for a few euros does exactly what a €20 tattoo glove does. Sprays physically cannot dissolve a pigment bound to skin proteins. At best they soften the surface and wipe away cells that were already on their way out, like oil or a hot bath. No accessory beats the free routine: exfoliation, oil, moisturizer, pool. One last thing: if you are removing this tattoo because the design was not for you, the problem probably was not the jagua, it was the motif. Next time, pick from the catalog or have your own printed. Two weeks is the right format for changing your mind without regret.
